Hello and thanks for the welcome!

I told myself if i ever got a computer of my own i would put linux on it, I am a new user and will probably have a lot of stupid questions lol. I have been doing a little reading online and have found the best way to try this out is from a live cd. i burned a 696Mb file of knoppix with windows vista home edition and cant seem to get it to boot correctly from the cd. while i was reading some of the threads you all have posted i learned that knoppix is possibly an advanced version, to use ubtan or fedora. Forgive my ignorance but should i try and get a generic burning program or maybe my bios cant read the code. I appriciate any help possible and look forward to being a member of the linux comunnity Oh yeah one last thing, i formatted my drive with windows vista...did i screw up?

    Welcome to LinuxForum
Though I'm Fedora user for past 5 years,I would suggest you to start with ubuntu and then try other distros.

(In case you need free Ubuntu CD/DVD,follow this link,But remember it will take some time for shipment-
    https://shipit.ubuntu.com/)

I already got one Ubuntu DVD from them

Happy Coding !!! Happy Learning Hope you have fun

Hi, and welcome! Your username rocks. haha.... Hopefully your time with linux will erase the idiot part and make you an expert.

Yes, knoppix may not be the best for first-time users. It all depends on how willing you are for a challenge. some people went straight to Gentoo for their first linux experience and loved it. And that's an extremely advanced linux. Well, for advanced linux users, I should say. If you're looking for something a little easier to get your feet wet, I suggest Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, PCLinuxOS, or LinuxMint. Even Opensuse might be a good start, too.

Harder ones include Fedora, Gentoo, Knoppix, Sabayon, Sidux, and anything with the Enlightenment, IceWM, or Fluxbox Desktop Manager. (for info on Desktop Managers, see here)

Any cd burner should work. Just make sure that you are selecting the appropriate function, i.e. burn image cd, or burn .iso file, ect.

Don't worry about how your hard drive is formatted. Linux will format it appropriately during the install.

Your bios will definitely be able to read the Linux Source Code. It is possible that you didn't burn the CD correctly, or the .iso file you downloaded may have been corrupted. Sometimes, some distros just will not work with certain computers. If you search some of my threads from earlier this year, you will find all the distros that flat out refused to work on my laptop for no apparent reason. Kind of rare, but still something to consider.

Well, I hope this points you in the right direction. Good luck, and as always, we're here to help. =)

    Welcome to the forums.

When you open the CD in Explorer do you see one file or many. If it is one, then you have burned it as a data disk. An iso file is an archive of a CD directory stucture which most burners can handle if you tell them to burn as an ISO.

There is the Vista edition of the iso recorder (ISO Recorder v3) which when installed will allow you right click on the iso file and correctly burn it.
