You can play around with some different effects by installing the Compiz Configuration Settings Manager.

The best cure I know for boredom is to learn to use the Linux command line. You'll find yourself in a world miles away from Windows.

If you are a music fan, have a look at Amarok and get your tags sorted out quickly. If you are a photography fan you can do something similar with F-Spot. And if you'd like to learn vector graphics I'm a huge fan of Inkscape. These are three of my favourite apps

To add to that said by the others, if you are bored with 8.04 I'd also recommend trying 8.10 to see if it might please you more:

The command line interface (CLI), also known as the shell, is quite simply the quickest and most elegant way of getting things done in Linux.
Graphical interfaces allow you to do things without having to understand very much about what you're doing (which is why novices like them) but they are slow and cumbersome, involving an awful lot of what a friend of mine called "faffing about with a mouse". CLI is actually easier once you have learned the basic commands.
You can get to a command prompt by opening a terminal on your desktop. There are loads of utilities and applications that work in a terminal and you can also use the shell to write complete programs (called scripts).
Here's a HOWTO to get you going."I'm just a little old lady; don't try to dazzle me with jargon!"

In terms of looks, you might want to try enlightenment. Ubuntu is based off of what is called the Gnome Desktop Manager, Enlightenment is a whole different set up, supposedly much faster and you can do some cool stuff with it -- I have tried it a few times but it's a bit...too different for me. If you go to synaptic package manager and look it up you'll be able to install it. Then to use it when you reboot and it gets to your login screen choose the options and then go to "enlightenment" it has a whole different feel, look and such to it. You can also youtube it and see some of the stuff people have done.
