Stop complaint and begin to contribute the patch

Recently one thread is published in ???????? | 17LAMP,?????.????????????(Fedora/CentOS/Perl/Drupal), it congratulated one Chinese student of Xi An post and telecom university succeed to submit one patch to the late kernel. This patch corrected one bug of return value in the late kernel.

The thread became the hot in some forums in China. Many replies encourage this student

to keep it on and expect him to win more achievement.

But there is a few of replies complain it’s no worth celebration, They complained this student only patch one very small bug.

I think everyone who try patching any bug for the kernel is worth celebration. The kernel is one community-driven project. Because more and more fans take part in the kernel project, and contribute lots of patches to the kernel. This make the kernel more and more successful than some commercial productions.

We shall encourage any person, especially for the student, to patch the kernel, even if this patch is only to correct the spelling mistake.

Those kicker should stop complaint and begin to study the kernel and try to contribute the patch.

I totally agree. Any fix is still a fix, regardless of how "small" or "big" the fix was. I know, as a student, I would be jumping for joy if I could contribute to patching the kernel!! I agree with you when you say people who find a bug and write a patch should always be encouraged and congratulated because, if everyone who writes a patch becomes disheartened, this community begins to fall apart, big time. And I know no one here wants that...

That's great that he was celebrated for it. The most important time to show appreciation is in the early days as it will encourage someone to move forward and contribute more. Who knows, this guy may end up contributing the most important patches to the kernel that we'll see...there's no point waiting until he's already done that to congratulate!

    Well done him.

So it's a small bug fix, it's a first one and as a small bug it might not have the attention that the bigger bugs get. It's a good thing that he (or she - you don't say) did.

Unfortunately there will always be people who criticize others for their work. We should feel sorry them as often these people are unable to do what they have criticized and therefore suffer from feelings of inadequacy.

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

    Pffff

There are people who only fixed spelling mistakes in the comments of the source code. Who's to say that is not important as well? Every fix is one.
