    Can't download poker site

    Hi there,

I am margot99 (no not my age). However, female and fairly useless at this technology. I bought a cute little Acer as a standby whilst my Toshiba has to go to hospital. As I play regular poker tournaents on line I need to download - but so far I cannot even download skype for linus. Comes up with the message Adobe cannot open this file because bla bla bla. I am pretty sure it should not be opened by adobe anyway but don't know where to go from here. On my Toshiba everything happens automatically and I have forgotten how to follow computer commands. Whilst I am not 99, lets pretend I am a 9 year old and start me off - that should get us somewhere.

    Many thanks

Well, little girl, the first step in problem solving, is the identification of symptom. Or is it the second? Anyway, in your post you've provided everything we need to know, except what the error is. Just when it was about to get interesting, you replace the symptom with "blah blah blah."

Let's start there instead, shall we?

    Can't download poker site

    Hi there,

first of all thanks for your speedy reply. Now, the site I am trying to download is Virgin Poker. It does the first bit of the download and when I try to 'open' the message reads: 'Adobe Reader could not open 'skype setup(2) exe' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).' Someone has suggested to me that I cannot use 'exe' files on a Linux op.
If that is so - I am wasting my and your time anyway.

    Please advise.

    Many thanks.

    Hi Margot99 Welcome to LinuxForums.
It's true that .exes file do not run on Linux, you might be able to get it working with a program called Wine.
I do not respond to private messages asking for Linux help, Please keep it on the forums only.

    Margot,
It should be possible to run the Virgin Poker client application, but you'll need to first install wine. You didn't really say what OS you're using, beyond linux. Anyway... for the moment, lets assume you're using some current distribution of linux. You've added wine via your distros' package manager. You've downloaded the Virgin Poker client to a folder on your drive. OK. you've got the components now. All you need to do is install virginpoker.exe under wine. In most modern distros, that's as simple as right click on virginpoker.exe, left click on "Open with Wine Windows Program Loader", left click appropriately 3 more times, and voila!

Well, I've made far too many assumptions already, if none of this helps you, give us some specific feedback and we'll see what we can do. Can't help you with the bidding part though. Good luck!

Wow, thank you so much. Have to get to work now - but will work through your suggestions later and report back to you. If I remember correctly I have got Linus Limpus (?)!!! . This is a brand new computer so I assume it is quite up-to-date.

Anyway, please be assured I am really grateful for your help.

    Many many thanks.

Just happened to catch your post while on lunch, surfing. Wine is usually available through 'add/remove software' or some similar item on your menu tree. If you can't find it, hopefully someone else here can assist you. I would, but I'm texting this from a Blackberry. If it's still unresolved when I get home (3 to 5 hours hence), I'll be happy to help.

I'm guessing you have one of those weeeeeeeeeeeeeee 'puters with linux pre-installed?
If you tell the good linux folks what make it is, they will I am sure, be able to find out the correct distro which will enable them to provide a step-by-step guidelet to the (not very) mysterious world of WINE and Linux.
Do you only play on Virgin?
I am on Wass, Cake & Poker.co.uk mostly....

Thanks qv. Unfortunately was not able to find the add/remove software command. Wakou is right - I have one of those pretty little new Acer Aspire One thingies. If you can be of further assistance it would be greatly appreciated. The os is linux linpus.

Wakou thanks for your response. As you can see above you were right. I have played on other sites, Party Poker, 888, Mansion, Full Tilt and Poker Stars. However, at Virgin I earn airmiles for playing and as I fly to Vegas three times a year, so those come in very handy.

    Again thanks guys.
