Firefox 2 phasing out
For all of you using Firefox 2, please be mindful of the fact that Mozilla will be arresting support for version 2 in the next few days: Mozilla Firefox 2
For those of you who have resisted upgrading to version 3 because of the lack of usabiity of the location bar, here is an add-on that offers the same address bar functionality as in version 2: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6227

Hi technossomy!
I've never really understood why people have disliked the bar so much. Can I ask what it is that puts people off? I promise not to debate or argue it with you... I'm just curious
On the other side of things, those add-ons aren't necessary. All they do is change a value in about:config that you can change yourself.
Open up about:config, search for browser.urlbar.maxRichResults and set the value to -1. That should produce the same results.

Thanks for your pointer, that is quite helpful. The location bar showed up as a disjoint pool of url codes taking up valuable screen estate, so it was usually better to type in the address from scratch.

Yep, I always have to disable some of the FF3 options as well. That URL bar can be especially annoying at times.
I usually change the following line in about:config to true:
Don't blame the FF devs for dropping 2.0, though.. can't support it forever.Code:browser.urlbar.matchOnlyTyped; true

I have not used Firefox 2 for months. I have about a dozen profiles in Seamonkey that I use 95% of the time. The other 5% is when I use Konqueror.
