Is your website infected with " Zero Day "?
I get home today and a relative asks me if my website is infected with the " zero day " virus..
I reply that I never heard of it and that no one is going to be bothered to infect my little website. I did a little checking and it seems to be big news for users of Internet Explorer.
How would something like this virus work on websites??Linux registered user # 414321

The infection does occur over a security hole in Microsoft's Internet Explorer. The news is that this time many versions of it are concerned likewise--making it a popular target.
In order to get infected, the user must visit a specially crafted website. Most webspace owners do not want their visitors to catch a virus, of course, but some of them got hacked and are now spreading it. This is what your relative meant.
As prophylaxis, I recommend to use Debian and Firefox, by the way

I am curious if we will observe an increase of "Which distro for a newbee?" threads in the course of the next days because of this.

My online bank had a message after login about security problems and recommended use of another web browser until MS had issued a patch to fix ... probably get a few firefox converts
... I still think switching web browser is viewed as a less painful option for most Windows users

How would someone find out if a website was infected? How can big websites like Paypal or Ebay or Craigslist know if they were infected.? What about the banks? I'm glad that I do not do on-line banking anymore.

A quick google gives zero day as term for an exploit for which a patch has not been released ... is this what you meant?

my school IT admin sent out a campus-wide email telling IE users they might want to switch for a few days to firefox/opera/chrome until a patch comes out, for fear of getting the virus and spreading it to other users on the network. Yay firefox!
