hmmm...

What impact will this have though?
Will all distros have to start following this standard so as not to get left behind?

Don't get me wrong, i'm all for standards and for good competition, but i'm not a big fan of any of the distros in the list given in that article.

I understand that this appears to specifically targeted toward business systems, but a lot of business practices go into the workstation distro's as well.

And if driver companies do start releasing linux versions, then they might stop handing out their specs. I can remember a few cases where
hacked" drivers work much better than the drivers from the companies.

I just hope this is done in such a way that our "freedom of choice" is not obstructed.

It is the LSB which Debian follows allready. It just tells you where to put all the system binarys and files like apache goes here glibc goes here. So now we wont have any conf files named differntly from differnt distros which is a great thing IMHO but distros dont have to follow this if they dont want to its been around for awhile just now some bussiness has gotten behind them.

Well, I've looked around on several websites, but I can't find any clear explanation of what these standards are.
I've just begun LFS, and I feel like using the standards :P

Oops. I had found that site, and even bumped on those specs. For some reason, I left again.

I like that Windows ad. It shows Microsoft is worried when it has to start attacking Linux. It is also an advert for Linux. Many people haven't heard of Linux and open source software. If they take any notice of this ad they may make enquiries.
IF I were Microsoft I would try and ignore Linux and hope it goes away

For us right now, any publicity is good publicity.
