Talking Setting fire to my LCD... Compiz-Fusion is gorgeous! (0.7.6 on PClinuxOS)

Hi all... just finished setting fire to my LCD, figuratively of course!

LOL Busy messing with all the Compiz plugins and loving it... transparent cube, with KDE Gears inside - fantastic... mouse to upper right-hand corner - select windows... mouse to the left-hand corner - desktops in a row, shining, reflective and beautiful.

Hmm, hmm, hmm! A distro upgrade on my PClinuxOS machine brought in the new Compiz-Fusion. It wasn't so cool initially, as the new interface no longer offers a Drak3d menu at the login screen! So all sorts of uglies took place on my KDE desktop (like window frames not loading and the like). Took some time for me to discover that 3D settings are available in the PCLOS Control Centre (under "Hardware")... where I discovered that I had "Compiz" selected, instead of "Compiz-Fusion"!!!

Quick change over to Fusion, and suddenly the Fusion-icon actually works... check out all those Emerald themes!

Thanks to the developers for this gorgeous work of art... I'm making the other engineers at work green with envy at my kick-ass Compiz desktop. Hell, even my wife is impressed! ROFL

Well, I'm still on KDE v3.5.9 which only has very experimental Kwin support. I have tried selecting it as the window manager, but Compiz seems to work better. I believe that PClinuxOS 2009 will be released with KDE4.x, so I should be trying out Kwin soon enough.

Whizzing cube desktops do seem a bit bling bling, but hell, it does make the whole effort of swapping viewports fun... so long live compositing/window managers. Besides, it's nice to open the eyes of others, who see the desktop and say, "ooh, wow, Vista's newest feature does that... um, what do you mean it's already available on Linux?". The whole neatly presented affair has prompted two people to ask me to burn them a copy of the distro. Progress.

Hmm, just finished reading Projects/KWin/4.0-release-notes - KDE TechBase. I agree with their take on the issue. I was (and still am) somehwat loath to move away from the safe arms of Kwin in KDE, when one of the very things I like most about KDE is the brilliant, seamless integration. So, Compiz as a window manager does have its issues for me. Still... I'm using it because that is part of Linux - experimentation.

However, I would love to have the same effects and productivity tools (desktop walls etc.) available to me, but running in Kwin on KDE, safely integrated the KDE way. Roll on KDE 4.x... .
