Yeah, I saw a really good one a couple of weeks ago on TV, for the very first time.
A Family Thing, starring Robert Duvall and James Earl Jones. It's been years since I enjoyed a movie so much. Warm gentle humor, wholesome and good for the whole family without being sappy.
It has a very unique premise, which I won't give away, you're gonna have to find out for yourself.

Bought it at Fry's Electronics yesterday as an impulse buy. It was my first blu-ray title purchase. The soundtrack and FX were pretty good. The plot was a little silly, but overall it was good escapist entertainment. Panoramic scenes such as the satellite sequences really show off the difference blu-ray makes. Now I'm waiting for next month's release of Star Trek.

Yeah, I got it on DVD a few days ago and finally got around to watching it. I never made it to the theater to see it, so this was my first time to watch the movie. I liked Star Trek quite a lot although a few of the special effects scenes didn't look very realistic, at least in my opinion.

I rented Star Trek and the thing that has been bothering me since I watch it is the Klingon mining vessel spaceship. It reminds me of the enemy spaceships from Babylon Five. I think they were called shadow vessels or something like that.

Romulan is correct, TechieMoe, my mistake!
I just watch Transformers, Revenge of the Fallen, and it too was very entertaining enough to make me forget how old I am.Linux registered user # 414321

I went on a blu-ray rental binge this week. Star Trek was part of it. I enjoyed it, but wasn't totally knocked out. I appreciated the fact that they filled in missing pieces of the Star Trek back story, but it somehow seemed too little too late. The fight sequence on the drill platform was good. One of the greatest strengths of the film was in the casting. Aside from Chekov, I feel they really got it right. It was a bit cartoonish in the beginning, but became more grounded as the film continued. I'll probably watch it again when it hits cable.
I also rented "GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra" (great SFX, so-so plot & acting), "brüno" (beyond silly. what can you say about a movie that features a dildo-cycle and a dancing penis sequence?), "Land of The Lost" (Will Ferrell headlined this, but Danny McBride steals every scene he's in. reasonably entertaining.), "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" (a kids' flick, but with enough adult humor and dialogue to make it enjoyable for any age), "Chronicles of Riddick" (it rocks, in DVD -or- blu-ray. I guess that's why they're making another sequel) "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans" (I really enjoyed this one, even if it didn't feature Kate Beckinsdale. Lycans kick ***, vamps get schooled.)
I also made a couple of blu-ray purchases, and learned a lesson. Techie Moe was right... blu-ray doesn't necessarily mean better. I've learned that renting and reading multiple reviews can save you from a bad purchase. I bought "Interview with the Vampire" on an impulse. From the opening sequence up to the graveyard sequence was blurred and grainy. The image quality was worse than the standard DVD version (which I popped in for comparison). The quality and resolution improves as the film advances, but by then you're already soured by the experience. On the other hand "Underworld: Evolution" was noticeably improved on blu-ray. You can actually see the hairs on their bodies in the nude scene. On the standard DVD it's just a fuzzy blur.
My next blu-ray purchase will probably be "The Ultimate Matrix Collection". Unfortunately the local rental stores don't carry this, or any of the 'Matrix' films in the blu-ray section, so I may need to depend solely on reviews.

My wife could be the poster girl for "Twilight." Today we saw "New Moon." It wasn't quite as excruciating as I was expecting. Much of it was definitely snoozeville, although there were a few good moments. I thought the CGI wolves were below par but the fight scene between the vampires at the end was pretty slick. The standout in my mind was the kid that played "Jacob" (Taylor Lautner). He did an exceptionally good job as compared to the rest of the cast. I believe he has a very bright future in films provided he has the right manager. Since this movie and the first in the series "Twilight" are essentially Soap opera + Vampires, it occurs to me my wife might be interested in seeing the old "Dark Shadows" series from the 1960s.
