    'Big Dog' - a state-of-the-art quadruped robot.

    DARPA, the research arm of the US DoD, has commissioned some pretty cool projects in the past, such as the Grand Challenge, where robots navigate -and even drive- passenger vehicles.over a designated course. One of their recent commissions involved a quadruped robot resembling a large mechanical dog, designed and constructed by Boston Dynamics. This is envisioned as an extension of the future foot soldier, where the robot does the heavy carrying (up to 340 lbs (about 154 kilos), leaving the human to focus on other things. A video of Big Dog along with videos of other BD robotics projects is available here. Now, if they can just do something about the noise.

    Interesting stuff... I personally believe that in the future, robots will replace humans on a very large scale and in many more ways than what we might currently realize. Of course, only the future will tell it all like it really will be, good or bad.
