What is in a $7000.00 computer?

I know I am just teasing myself looking at the computer ratings for 2008 but I began to wonder just why would someone be willing to pay $7000.00 for a computer that did not hug and kiss you when you walked through the door?

What should a $150K car do for you?

Lol...Don't know about the computer, but the car should be self driving, self cleaning, do its own oil changes and maintenance...basically, do everything without me.....so I can just sit in the seat, smoke, sleep, and listen to music...I know that car would cost more than 150K but I wouldn't pay that much for a car unless it did.

I remember I wanted a SavRow PC for a while. It was overclocked to 4+GHz at a time when 2.4GHz was the norm. It was liquid cooled and had the absolute best of everything available. I think it was about STG£4000 at the time, which would have been around $7000 at the exchange rate of the day.

It just had the best components, the maximum amount of everything and good tolerances. There was of course lights and LCD panels amongst other frivolities.

However if I had $7000 to spend on a PC, I wouldn't go retail. I'd spend about $3000 on parts and build an even better one myself. There's a lot of markup and branding on these things

I come from a generation when motorcycles would top out at 5,000 brand new. For years Harleys could be bought cheap because of the reputation for leaking oil and having to maintain them. Back in the 80s I could buy a running pieced together Panhead Chopper for around 900 to 1500 dollars. Now a days because of reputations again, that same Panhead now sells for 9000 to 15000 dollars. I am not talking about a cherry motorcycle either. I'm Lucky in the fact I bought a few bikes back when Harley Davidsons were considered Junk motorcycles. I'll be da@@ed if I'll pay 25,000 dollars for something called prestige.

What I like about PCs is that after a few years, they drop in value dramatically.
My Military Laptops were 5000 dollars back in the day they were new. I picked mine up used for approx. 75 dollars each. They work just fine using Linux, would probably run Windows , except for Vista, if I wasn't a cheap cuss. Common sense should kick in when looking at a tool as far as to what the thing should be worth to do the job you are needing it to do.

I think $6000 of those is for a deluxe version of Windows Vista that actually works. You get what you pay for you know

I asked a similar question once at the Harrow Computer Club. The consensus seemed to be that if you use your computer mainly for browsing, email, word processing and straightforward downloads, you'd be a fool to spend that kind of money, but if you want to play the latest games, then you need the latest hardware. That means a tip-top processor and an ultra-fast graphics card with more memory than the average computer had altogether a few years ago. And of course you have to pay for all that.

Games, it seems are the cutting edge of computing and always have been.

I'd maybe pay that for a server, but to me it still sounds like you can purchase 14 common PCs of it (at least when it is 7000 Euro). Or you can purchase 28 netbooks of it. It's just too damn expensiv for me. All I need is a small processor (although you can't find below the dual cores any more these days), a stable motherboard, a keyboard, a screen, 150 GB disk space, 256 MB RAM and a command line system.

Let's say I feel at home at the command line. Get out with your cutting edge games, just let me write one, I think that's more fun(saying that makes me popular at school XD, sad enough I'm still learning, but getting closer every day).

I do not know anyone who owns a " gaming " computer nor do I know of any store that displays one.
What kind of games are on such computers?
