What's cool in Linux?
Hi guys!
It's been a year since I've been experimenting with different distros and I've read several articles and reviews on the net about many releases and the results are varied. I would like to have anyone's opinions on what they like or dislike about Linux. Also I'll be making a presentation at school on Linux and a few ideas would be welcome. Thanks a lot !!!

What I like about Linux is:
1) It's very stable and never crashes or gives you the blue screen of death.
2) It's safe to use on the Internet.
3) It easy to understand how it works (you're not allowed to understand how Windows works).
4) It can easily be adapted to run on old hardware.
5) Using it makes you part of a community who enjoy learning and teaching each other.
6) I like the philosophy of free software.
None of this is exactly "cool" except perhaps 6)."I'm just a little old lady; don't try to dazzle me with jargon!"

Some more cool points are:
- You can update ALL your programs (the OS itself, firefox, Openoffice, video/music players, EVERYTHING) with 1 click.
- It is by far the coolest looking OS. Just show 2 videos of Compiz-Fusion and Fedora's Plymouth bootloader. And all this without dual-core or latest graphics card model
- You don't have to throw your computer to install the new version.
- You can change anything you want: kernel, bootloader, login manager, Desktop environment, window manager, etc.. In Windows and Mac, you are stuck with what the company thought it is good for you.

It's frakking fast on old gear and lets you operate a modern operating system on same gear. Did I mention it's free?

1) Its Free - both as in beer and free as in freedom
2) no other community will help out new folks like the linux community will.
3) Its kinda like a bike, once you learn how to ride it, you will start to customize it.
4) you are secure.
5) you can learn as little or as much about what is going under the hood that you want.
6) Even stuff that is thought to be buggy and unstable is more stable then windows most of the time!
7) It unlocks the power of your computer, be it a old one, or a top of the line new one!

OK, this is the killer one! (I forgot it in my previous post)
Linux powers most of the world's Supercomputers, as well as NASA's Mars Phoenix Lander!
It can also run in Intel, AMD, ARM, MIPS, PowerPC, Sparc, Risk, Alpha, PS3, Cell phones, GPS.
We 'll probably see toasters and blenders running Linux in a few years.
It powers Google and Wikipedia amongst other big web sites.

When vista came out with all it's problems, I said enough was enough and decided to go full immersion with Linux. I wiped windows from all my machines at home. It was really tough at first. For the first month or two, I was always bugging my friend, who encouraged me from the start, about this and that... Why the F is it so difficult to get Linux working.. Why do I have to google every little thing to figure it out... I nearly gave up on it but my friend, in his wisdom, said something to the effect: You can give up any time you like. You can go back to using your windows... or you can wipe the sand from your vagina, man up, and keep learning and continue to give MS the middle finger. I laughed and went back to researching the current problem at hand... and I'm glad I did.
Linux makes you smarter. And it makes you learn so much more than just how to get the **** working.
It's about 18 months later and I've never looked back. I have no need for windows in my life. I can do everything I need to do in Linux and I'm more secure doing it.
Now it's time for me to start giving back to the community that's been supporting me all this time and start helping to answer the new noobz questions - and I'll do it with a smile on my face and raised middle finger at MS! hahaha
See you in the forums!
