    Welcome Kas.
I bet you will put Linux soon, on your main computer instead of spare pc.
I suggest you to use Linux Mint
Mint itself is Ubuntu..but very much optimized for desktop.
and less buggy. cause it will upgrade packages only after those are tested from Mint developers.
    Never make any misteaks.

B2wild..thanks for the input..I did download mint as you suggested and tried to intall it on the spare pc...and it would not work...I only have 256 meg of ram and when I tried to install it said you only have 254, try it, it may not work...I tried installing on pc and nothing...tried just using the disk and it would go so far a freeze up, when it got to the end...it takes a long time for the cd reader to load, so far I have not had a positive experience with linux...now what do I do...this machine that I am is a hp 1.9ghz with 1.5gram and I do not want to put it this pc until I feel comfortabe with linux and besides the hd is formatted in ntfs and I do not think linux likes that...any more suggestions..maybe a lesser linux instead of mint,
    regards,
    Kas

    Hi Kas,

There are many lighter Linux Distros out there, here are a few I have liked in the past (I use Mint these days - it's great but it's not a lightweight )

XUbuntu (Ubuntu with a lighter desktop) Xubuntu Home Page | Xubuntu
Zenwalk (A very light Slackware based distro) www.zenwalk.org - Ever tried zen computing?
Vector Linux (Another light Slackware based distro) Welcome to VectorLinux — VectorLinux.com
If we hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate! (Zapp Brannigan)

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

..I only have 256 meg of ram
I'm pretty familiar with what Linux distros run good with this ram limitation and I found
Zenwalk (A very light Slackware based distro) www.zenwalk.org - Ever tried zen computing? - Ever tried zen computing?
To be a full featured distro while remaining lightweight. It runs the xfce desktop just like Xubuntu does but is a bit snappier. You can also go with Xubuntu which I also run on 256 mb of ram. It has a lager repository than Zenwalk, but I have found since I am not a developer or package writer that for basic computer needs that the difference doesn't matter. For right now, I like Zenwalk better than Xubuntu, but that is just a personal opinion and shouldn't effect any personal choices you wish to make. Happy trails and have fun using Linux.

and then nothing...when ever I see the word grub I get nervous..
    now what
I was able to play the cd on the system and everything played well and then I said to my self go ahead and install the system on the hd and I did..it went thru the repartionion phase and loaded all the programs ...and here we are back to zero..linux is getting to me..help
