New to Linux
Hey I am new to Linux and looking for advice I read all the things on choosing a distribution but I am still stuck it seems that the favorite in the coffee lounge here is Ubuntu and was just wondering why?
I also heard that there is no real need for security on Linux? is that true? and will I still be able to find the software I need know about open office but what about a program that converts avi and other video file types to DVD and a program to open .rar files and how about a torrent client?
And since I am new should I buy or should I just download?
Thanks much appreciated

Welcome to the forums!
I think Ubuntu is popular because the Ubuntu folks are good at marketing, plus it's a fairly easy distribution for most new users to start with.
Whether or not you need security applications under Linux would depend on your computer usage and habits. You can check this short guide to security to help determine if you need any security apps:

I'd recommend finding the distro you want to start with, download and burn the ISO file to disk, and install from that. Check this HowTo for downloading and burning the ISO files as images:
