I am working on getting it installed right now.

It looks great from what I have seen.

I have installed it today on my Debian 5 laptop using the graphical installer. I had to install loads (and I mean loads) of development libraries for the compilation but it all went smoothly.

I'm posting this from it now and it seems really good so far. These are only my first impressions as it has only been installed for about half an hour or so but they are very good first impressions which does bode well.

It seems as fast and light as XFCE 4.4 based purely on my non scientific observation and on the fact that my laptop fans are significantly less busy than with the same apps running in Gnome.

Incidentally, I quite like Debian 5 too but I feel that's because I have grown as a Linux user since my last foray into the world of Debian.

I have been running it all night, and I can definitely say it is an improvement over 4.4. It is much smoother, some config options have been changed, and it is really turning into a very nice DE.

I will be using this for a while I hope.

Does it mean that it became easier to define shortcuts? Is it possible to drag and drop an application's shortcut onto the taskbar? I liked XFCe, but it took quite a long time until I've done with all the customizations.

Some of the Xfce 4.6 apps that are "must have" for me still aren't in the Arch repositories and I don't want to bother with building them myself so it might be another day or two before I get to try it.

Glad to hear it's working out well for you guys, though!

The overlay I am using for Gentoo doesn't have all the packages available yet, and it is still a little buggy, but from what I have read, it is supposed to be easier to do, yes.

And it does take me a while to customize it like I want as well. I can't wait to get the whole thing installed.

Ok, got 4.6 installed earlier today and it definitely seems to be an improvement over previous versions. Not sure, but I'm thinking that it takes longer to configure only because you have to poke around a bit to figure out how to tweak it. I really haven't run across much in the way of bugs yet.

Edit: I should add that 4.6 feels just a tad faster and more responsive to me, and it was already pretty fast.

I have been using 4.6 off and on for a few days now and I like it very much. I don't think it will yet replace Gnome on my main desktop machine but it has on my main laptop and it might in the future make it to the desktop.

    Missing icons, anyone?

I read on the Xfce developer mailinglist that there was some kind of missing icons issue that has a few devs and end users rather stirred up. I installed the gnome-icon-theme and didn't experience any problems. It's my understanding that the tango-icon-theme will fix this issue as well, should any of you run into it.
