I like so many programs it is tough to pick a favorite. However, one app that jumps to mind is avidemux2. I use this quite a bit to edit and convert video files. I just finished putting together a video DVD of movies we took of our toddler daughter over the last year. I also really like the showfoto applet that is part of digikam because it has the easiest red eye reduction function for photos I'm aware of on Linux.

    Only Three

I find only 3 items essential:

    1. emacs

It edits text, reads e-mail, runs a shell and file browser, and even will give the phases of the moon.

    2. gimp with the ufraw plugin
    3. xsane

These provide all needed support for digital photography.

For web browsing, media viewing, and many other desktop tasks, there are plenty of tools, most of which work. If one disappears, there are others.
