So he's an identity thief who ran data-mining botnets. Good riddance. I just wish the news media hadn't used the term "hacker."

I just hate crackers. All of them. I've got a friend, who's a cracker, and I don't like that a bit. He is however nice when you speak to him in person.

That's one I didn't know, but since I'm more interested in Cockney instead of American slang ... It's pretty much obvious, and hey, I'm Dutch al right!
And here cracker should be defined as a computer burglar.

Why? This guy has effectively exposed seriously poor security in US military servers. Whatever his motivation, it wasn't to expose military secrets to US enemies or terrorists.
Personally, I think the US military owe this guy a medal. His actions can only improve military security. He certainly does not deserve 'to fry' for doing this.Linux user #126863 - see http://linuxcounter.net/

No, I disagree. If all he was doing was exposing vulnerabilities, that's fine. Hire him, give him a medal, whatever. You seem to be missing the part about him setting up a botnet for the purposes of disseminating spam for his own personal gain and unlawfully distributing user information such as logons, passwords and banking information. If that's the kind of guy you think deserves a medal, I don't want to live in your world.

1. I use Linux. Linux is a Hacker OS (allegedly). I don't want Linux to associated with criminal behavior as that will play into the hands of MS and the like.
2. Maybe he isn't a terrorist but he could be. Come down on all these criminals hard and show them that there are very real consequences. Maybe it will make others think twice before committing the crime.
3. He's an smug git who gives all geeks a bad name
Would you take the same view if a criminal broke into your house and read all your personal files but didn't take or damage anything? If we hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate! (Zapp Brannigan)
