Hi All. Newbie here
Hello Community...
I am very very new to Linux and have zero knowledge. Join this community to pick up on Linux.
Very interested to revive my old Acer Travelmate 290Xi and looking for the most suitable Linux OS for it.
Hope there's something readily available n discussed in the forum threads or i might need to ask from among the experts in the community.

Howdy and Welcome hansolo. Depending on how much ram you have on your Acer will effect what is recommended. If you have just the minimum 256mb, then I would recommend Mepis AntiX 8. Or Puppy Dingo. You son't have to go with my recommendations. I'm sure other forum memebers who are gonna say Welcome will offer some good free distro advice.

When I googled for this model number, this is what I got
TravelMate 290Xi Specifications Page
I assume from this that yo have 256MB of RAM.
Now coming to the point, since you have less RAM, then it would be good that you use XFCE which is a lightweight graphical Desktop environment. GNOME and KDE would be too heavy for 256MB and the whole system would be as slow as sloth.
I would suggest to install Xubuntu, since it comes with Xfce. Ubuntu comes with GNOME and Kubuntu comes with KDE both of them would suck your system.
As I see it has Intel 855 Graphics chipset , so Graphics, LAN and Wireless should not be of much problem.
Let's wait for others to reply.

Firstly, thank you for the welcome.
Actually, i just started to know about Linux recently n did some browsing. The screenshots from linux users looks very tempting n makes me 1 2 try out after using windows from the day i know PC.
As i have crashed my TM290 HDD last week and couldn't get the recovery to get my legit XP up again, so here i am, in the Linux comm.
I intend to get additonal 1G Ram in the free slot but its costly for DDR333 nowadays (approx USD60).
Thanks for the suggestion and recommendations. Learned something already, heh heh. I will look through the programs and see whats the best.
Anyway, can i have multiple Linux on a laptop?

You can install as many distros as you want/have room for - disk space is the thing that is likely to limit the number of distros you install (dont forget you are limited to 4 primary partitions and typically 12 logical partitions per hard drive (sda1 to 15 or hda1 to 15 - depending on the hard drive interface).
Suggest you try xfce or one of the window managers like fluxbox rather than using gnome or kde if you have limited RAM.

Why... of course! For a nominal service charge we'd be happy to fix you right up. Simply give us your credit card and social security number and we'll have your order processed immediately.

Seriously though, it shouldn't be a problem as long as you don't go crazy with it. What were you thinking of?

Actually, i am not sure which linux would suits me. Intention to install multiple linux is to see them side by side. I am not a programmer by the way. Main using the laptop for surfing, downloads, movies and if i have time, some general office work.
At this moment, i am downloading Xbuntu. Hope to install it in the weekend

Sounds like you're getting a handle on it already. You might burn 2 or 3 LiveCD's of the distros that most pique your interest. Play around with them for a little bit, then pick one and install it. It will probably take some time to figure out which distro suits you best, but that's ok, you're not in a race. Just enjoy the process. Xubuntu is a great starting point, btw. Oh, and before I forget... Welcome to Linux forums!
