Hi All
Hi all,
I installed Ubuntu about a month ago to get away from the sluggish drudgery that was Vista and I've not looked back since. I'm a student doing a lot of computational chemistry work at the moment and linux has fitted in nicely and given me lots more options for open source software to use - which is nice, though I'm still searching for the "ultimate"!
Back at school I did a bit of messing around with linux on an old computer we had in the house, I didn't do much but managed to get it to print/go online, set up a SETI@home server for the other computers in the house (!) and other simple things. I tried a couple of distros back then (fedora, redhat, suse) but never for long enough to figure out the major differences as the box I put them on was always really old with poor graphics etc so didn't really want it as my main system. Now though I'm dual boot on ubuntu (8.10) now and loving it. I look forward to the release of jaunty to give me an excuse to redo my partitioning, shrinking windows to as small as possible and giving myself a seperate /home partition (should of really done that to start...) then someday I may venture away from Gnome and even dip my toes in the water for some other distros if I start to feel adventurous!
Hope I can help out by answering simple/newbie questions and I look forward to benefiting and learning from your experiences on tougher topics by reading posts and asking my own questions!
See you around,
Chris

Hi, Chris! Welcome to LinuxForums!

I hope you enjoy your time here, and with Linux as well! As far as still looking for the "Ultimate", just keep trying different distros. Eventually, you'll come across one that just seems to fit you perfectly.
See you on the boards!Jay
