    PCLOS 2009.1 Review Parts 1, 2, 3, ect...

Well I tinkered around with PCLinuxOS 2009.1 for a few hours yesterday and was impressed, but not surprised.

Impressed because the Distro lives up to it's reputation, but not surprised by it doing so.

The one word I would choose to describe it overall is smooth. It's very smooth and fluid in its operating. I have seen a lot of stability, but no more than 2007-Final. However, I suspect that more than a few hours of use is required to really test the mettle of its stability.

There is, however, one thing I can't quite get over. We waited almost two full, long years for the newest version of PCLOS and for what? It's pretty much the same distro repackaged with a new kicker, desktop wallpaper, and logo.

"Well, Skittle, that's how most distros are."

I would agree with you, but most distros release a new version every 6-12 months. Then after 2-3 years, they offer something faster and better; e.g. Ubuntu, Sabayon, Debian. See, what I am getting at is the release plans that Ubuntu, Fedora, and other distros have make it understood and expected that each sequential release will just be a fix of the one before it. PCLOS's lack of a release plan, and long-wait periods in between releases seem to give off an expectation of a brand new version. Maybe I just got my hopes up too high, maybe I've become kubuntu-fied, or maybe it's a little of all that AND the fact that PCLOS needs a more stable release plan that will send off all the right messages regarding each release. Perhaps a more clear market plan for each release.

I hate to say it, but PCLOS doesn't offer anything that another distro doesn't, or even anything different than PCLOS's previous versions themselves. It might as well be called RPLOS, for Re-Packaged-LinuxOS.

I'm sure I'll report more later as I keep using it.
    Using Linux since June 2007
    Distros: Mint 12
    SPECS: AMD Atholon 64 X2 5400+, 2GB RAM, GeForce 8800 GTS
When your whole life is on one computer, servers and all, choose stability over anything else.
