Saying "Goodbye" to Windows... sort of

First, I want to say that I've been using Windows PCs for the better part of 12 years now. It's pretty much all I know.

Last week, I installed Ubuntu on one of my Windows XP PCs, and after a week of using it instead of Windows, I've been very impressed by the speed. When I boot into Windows XP, I have to wait around for about 5 minutes before the system releases enough resources to start working. With Ubuntu, it's been right there from the moment I log in. I'm not sure if the bootup itself is any longer, but when I log in it's there.

So, now that I've gotten my feet wet, I decided to install Mandriva on another XP PC I have. I was going to do a dual boot, but the partition manager couldn't resize the partition. Instead of going away empty-handed, I now have two pcs in my living room which are former XP-now Linux PCs.

I haven't totally abandoned windows -- yet. I still have a Vista notebook PC, but I figure I'll keep at least one Windows PC around for a while, in case I find something that I need to be able to do that I need windows for.

So, for the near future, I'll be running Ubuntu and Mandriva side-by-side. I've used them both in the past and had a pretty good experience both times.

Oh yeah, I also just got a mac.

What the hell is wrong with me?

I would assume that using windoze was the bad part of those years

I usually stumble upon the term "distro hopper", but in Linux everyone is free to choose about everything!

Windows had its moments and got me where I am today, but since around 2002, I have just been biding my time until Linux was fit for the average desktop user. Personally, I think it's been there for the past couple of distrubutions with Ubuntu. I honestly didn't start this to try to get rid of Windows. But when I experienced how much more responsive my PC was with Ubuntu, I just couldn't stand going back into Windows.

You are suffering from what is commonly known as "Linux enlightenment", or "The Linux Way".

You see, you've been so confined by Micro$oft and their Windoze BS (or OS) for so long, that when you try something that finally works like a computer is supposed to, you realize what you have been missing out on and start loving your computer and life in general.

I have to admit that I haven't been this excited about computing since 1997.
