Thats why I have wireless cards installed on all my laptops and Desktops.

Edit: should've mentioned, there is a lotta free hotspots in Texas. Rest areas are just one of these. I have one just a couple miles from me.

    LOL so true.
But this should not be a reason. We have better technology present now.
but setting up a new infrastructure needs money and time.
networking technology is far more ahed than our home routers.

Its all because corporate giants think internet is their private property. and restricting it all the time for their products.
    Never make any misteaks.

Please excuse my ignorance, Rokytnji, but wikipedia does not explain just how wireless cards work nor how much they cost to buy or to operate.

Ok. What my wireless card does is it picks up whatever wireless routers are running in the area that I am at. If it is a unsecured Network (No WEP Password), My Linux Operating System, Whether its Ubuntu, AntiX, Mint, NimbleX, or even Puppy, will detect and ask if I wish to connect to it. I posted a while back for you a Wireless G PCI card for a Desktop that I know works in Linux because I bought one and use it and it was priced at $14.99. You just pop the side panel on your Desktop and plug it into any available PCI slot. If anybody in your block area is running a unsecured router, you can surf the net on their signal. I live out in the boonies, so I don't have all the wireless access like you do in the big city. Starbucks I think throws out a free wireless signal for one.

After I installed my wireless card, The computer automatically installs the module/driver on bootup. I just go to whatever Network manager I am using whether WICD or Network Manager. Click on Tab or icon. Check on the connect wirelessly box (if using Network manager In Gnome, Its the icon on top r/h of screen) or use the connect button if using Fluxbox or Icewm using WICD.

Hope that explains it for ya.

Oh the Wireless Card I used was a Rosewill

    Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5Rating + 5 Works very well with Linux!

Pros: Both Slackware and Ubuntu detected it right off the bat. Like any good piece of hardware, it doesn't get noticed. It does its job and stays out of the way
Don't pay any attention to the Windows Users reviews. They run Windows, so of course they are gonna *****.

If your computer can handle it aka video card and ram. Yes. I watch free movies all the time on a 900mhz, 256 mb laptop all the time,

You definitely have peaked my interest.
I tried to tell ya about this before. I use my laptops on the go on my motorcycle and can connect to this forum wirelessly when I pull into a truckstop or motel or reststop and if they are running free wireless,
Wireless G is good for about 54 mb/sec connection and the card I linked you to is cheap and wireless g and I know it works in Linux because I use it.

It's legal as long as you're connecting to a public WiFi or your neighbor knows and agrees (which may be against his/her TAC, but that's not your issue). Using a neighbor's wifi without their knowledge and consent is theft of service.

Safety is also suspect when you are connecting with no encryption. Anyone in range can listen to and log your packets, so don't log in anywhere that requires passwords or bank data or any personal info without first establishing a secure (ssl/https) connection. An unsecured wifi signal, especially at public hotspots, is a gold mine for identity theives. Simply be aware of what you are transmitting where and how. That's all.

For the rest, Roky is correct, though throughput is relative to both the quality of your connection and inversely to how many computers are connected to the same access point.

Corporate giants think WE are their property too.
With the emerging federalization of private industry, things are only gonna get worse.

I edited this post so it wouldn't get closed down.
Just wanted to include a small snippet of my observation.

    Nothing to see here citizen
