    Question Linux certs

    Hi everyone

I just wondered what the state of play was with the LPI exams now. I'm kinda thinking about studying for the basic one this year and just wondered what (if anything) they would be worth on my CV. I'm pretty junior in IT support but have set up web servers and stuff for the boss ..using linux of course... and really fancy having something a little official to show some competency. I also looked into the Linux+ exam too but the genral consensus at the time was that it was less well respected.

    Any opinions on the subject??

It depends on you, what kind of traning you need.. LPIC1/2 or CompTIA Linux+ certification concentrates of general Linux, command line and etc.

Where as Novell and Red Hat certifications emphasis on server side and configuration and troubleshooting, networking, which is more closer to the way linux used in industry. rest of the things like general Linux CLI and scrpting can be leared indivisually.
RedHat certifications are world know and recongnized every where, and have a special reputition.
Im a RHCE myself and getting ready for RHCSS. I chosen RedHat cause I found it really worth, but I can't say that LPIC is bad.
You should take look at their course contents and exam difficulties. and select one which one is more suitable for your job profile.

    Good luck on this..

I think it depends on the possible requirements of the environment you'll be working in. I think the Linux+ gets less credit than it deserves. While it doesn't concentrate on any one specific distro, having it under your belt signifies enough knowledge to handle most any distro out there. While the RHCE concentrates on server config, networking, etc.

Look into what your needs are... not the 'general consensus'.

Another thing to consider is that you don't only have to get one cert.

Maybe get your LPI and then decide if you want to go and get RHCE and beyond, but I agree with what has been said. Look at what is better for you

Thanks for the opinions guys. I'll take it all on board. The truth is I don't need any training/certification, its purley to add a little diversity to my CV in these troubled times and have something to show for my years with Linux. In the long run I definatley fancy going down the RHCT/RHCE route but at the moment frankely I just want something quick which I'll be able to handle easily.

I'm thinking LPI and then hopefully picking up some professional experience in the next couple of years to make the leap to RHCT a little easier.
