    Ubuntu 9.04 "Jaunty Jackalope"

The official release for Ubuntu 9.04 is next week (April 23rd) but the release candidate came out yesterday and I'm in the process of downloading it. Have any of you given it a try? What do you think?

I decided this time to wait for the final release. I'm just gonna take it as an update. I'm looking forward to it though, hopefully there are some nice goodies in there for me

I just did a clean install of Jaunty on my laptop and put up a quick rant on it. Long story short, there are some small improvements, but if you've already got your 8.10 system set up the way you want it I really don't see a compelling reason to upgrade.

I haven't tried the RC, but I did try one of the earlier releases of 9.04. I agree that it's not a great leap forward for Ubuntu, but I think the small improvements add up to a significantly better user experience. I always found 8.10 to be painfully slow to boot, and 9.04, especially with ext4, boots near as quick as my Arch Linux install. It might just be perception, but I thought the desktop felt snappier and more responsive as well. I would actually consider using 9.04, when I couldn't wait to get 8.10 off my system.

I figured as much so I'll stick to the regular upgrade. Occasionally when there are big changes I'll start clean to get the full benefit.

I've been running Jaunty through my usual everyday tasks over the weekend and aside from 2 bugs, it seems to work fine. When configuring FileZilla to work with my website host, it froze and I had to hard reboot. Also, at random intervals when I choose to shut down the laptop it doesn't. Instead it sits at a blank screen indefinitely until I power it down manually with the power button. This is a relatively rare thing, but still notable.

I tried the final release last night and unfortunately it looks like I'm going to have to either revert to 8.10 or find another distribution to call home. The bug where it refuses to shut down is now every time rather than at random intervals. This is an unacceptable bug for me. I'll see if anyone has reported it yet, and if not add it to Launchpad. I may have to revoke my 3 penguin rating as well.

    Yep, it's been reported. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...sh/+bug/332772

I'm curious if the shutdown bug is also present in Jaunty 32-bit. I'm going to burn it real quick and see. I'll report back when I know something.

My curiosity has been satisfied. I wasn't able to reproduce the shutdown bug with Jaunty 32-bit, so it seems that the issue is specific to the 64-bit stream. I've updated my rant to reflect that.
