Linux-Anti-Theft - Localise your precious systems!
Hi all,
I'm proud to present my new web-service: linux-anti-theft.net
Introduction
Hardware can be replaced, but your personal files may be priceless; both for self-employed persons, employees and home users. Today we increasingly hear about the theft of computer systems. The victim will report to the police, but there is only little chance that a stolen system is found and returned to the legal owner.
What Linux-Anti-Theft.net does?
In order to to improve the chances of return of your system after a theft, your system can be monitored. Each time when your laptop or desktop system starts up it will automatically send the internal and external IP adresses of the network it is connected to. These data send by your sytem will be collected in our database and can be consulted through your personal control panel. For local authorities this will be very helpful in tracing back your system.
Linux-anti-theft in 4 steps
- Register yourself and get your personal codes.
- Download and install the Linux anti-theft client.
- The client sends at each startup of your system the internal and external (unique for each internet user) IP address to your account. This happens even before a user is logged in.
- Is your system stolen? Consult your personal account and localise your system using the IP broadcast address. So you can follow your system, it doesn't matter where it is located.
Kind regards,
Kris

If you had read the faq, you had found a link to download the script and host it on your own server if you like.
Only constructive criticism please.

That would be this part then: "this isn't the entire code of Linux-anti-theft.net, but the basis to build an anti-theft system for your personal use"
Which sounds like it's not even FOSS.
Release it under the GPL. all of it... at the moment it looks like you've got proprietary code mixed with GPL code. This pretty much screams "do not touch" to me.Only constructive criticism please.
Say what license it uses somewhere on the site, even if it's not GPL.

With "entire code of linux-anti-theft.net" I mean the website code itself, the PHP part, because it contains a full CMS system.
The code used to send the IP address is open, it is a small shell script.
I released a stripped version of linux-anti-theft.net with the same shell script and some PHP files to set it up on your own webserver. That script is released under the GPL license.
Linux-anti-theft.net isn't released under any license, it is just my own work.
I'm from Belgium, the website was first released in dutch only. Because the great interest here, we translated the script also into english.
It's just a web-service, feel free to use it or not, or edit the script to your own needs and host it on your own webserver.

Registered members can download the shell script, because only they have a personal code and control code to identify themself at their own account.
Otherwise, some people would say "hey, what codes do I have to enter here?", that's confusing for them.
The shell script itself is the same as in the striped version, but without the "step by step install guide".
Even, the striped version has some more. It can upload a picture from your webcam when your system starts and upload it via FTP to your own server if you want that.
