NASA in the news.
Does anyone else here follow the space missions and other goings-on at NASA these days? I signed up a while back for their email notification service, and my inbox has been blowing up over the past 48 hours. Mainly due to the Atlantis shuttle mission and the international space station. Anyone within earshot of a tv has probably heard about the space debris hazard complicating the Atlantis/Hubble DST service mission.
For anyone interested in keeping up with this stuff, there are videos, audio feeds and tv broadcast feeds on the various mission sites at nasa.gov While we aren't presently undertaking any manned missions to Mars or the moon, there's still some cool stuff going on. We're working more and more with other countries. and learning some very interesting things about our galaxy and the rest of the universe. Aside from the Hubble DST mission, there's also the Kepler Mission (to find earth-like planets), the SOHO mission (to study the sun at a closer range), the Mars rover, and the Chandra X-ray observatory. Tres cool!
I'm aware through standard news channels of what they are currently working on and the dangers involved. Sometimes I watch the NASA channel on satellite TV, but haven't seen any of it over the last couple of days.
Yes I signed up for NASA's news service a few months ago. My primary interest is the Kepler telescope and its search for Earth like planets.
I do know what you are speaking of when you say your inbox is crushed. My inbox suffered the same situation.
In my case there are so many different projects that are supporting the Kepler mission. That is data gathered is being verified by independent methods. My reading time would be totally taken over had I not selectively chose what to read.
Well time to go to work.

Their launch today is particularly exciting with the satellites "Herschel" and "Planck". Given what Hubble has revealed in it's time so far one can only wonder what what these two will find.
Even as someone who could not be described as an astronomy buff, these are still exciting times.

YUP...I'm a geek... I'm in my room working on the computer with the TV turned up in the other room so I can hear the space shuttle communications on the NASA channel...
Even if I wasn't interested (which I am), I'd have no choice but to pay attention.
