    Lenovo Notebooks

    Hello,

My dad's old laptop finally gave in the other day and we're all looking to buy him a new one for his 60th birthday. He dislikes Windows and I am planning to install some form of Linux (probably Ubuntu for him) on it.

This is the notebook we are looking at: (Lenovo N500)

Lenovo N500 specifications I'd like to know whether Linux will work fine on it if anyone knows and if you don't, whether Linux generally works fine on Lenovo notebooks.

    Thanks in advance.

Linux generally works on almost any notebook, including Lenovo. Those specs pages are pretty much useless to determine if there will be problem areas, because it's all about the specific hardware. Areas where you are likely to run into difficulties are webcams, hotkeys, and wireless cards. In most cases, there are fixes to any problems, but they don't always work correctly out of the box. Also, a lot of notebooks use integrated Intel graphics chips, some of which have some performance regressions in the driver currently used by Ubuntu 9.04. I don't know if other distros are currently using the problem driver.
