    I'm running a server as well, but it only serves usefull things for people in my timezone, and since I assume they're aleep after 24:00 I let it shutdown at that time (using crontab) and an auto boot at 9:00 in the BIOS.

    My workstation is always shutdown, because of my parents energy bill.

    Maybe in the future if my server starts bringing in money I'll keep it on 24/7, but for now it's useless to do.
