It still seems like you're just peeved at the fact that a volunteer driven OS doesn't work the same way that Windows does. Of course, if Linux had a multi-billion dollar budget o work with, we wouldn't be having this discussion... so that's kinda moot.
Also, in my opinion anyway, this is more of a gripe or tirade than a legitimate rant. The main reason I say that is because while you're asserting the fact that you've done 'this and that' to fix your sound, gone 'digging on other fora'... you've still told us nothing of what you've tried. No errors, no specific steps taken.
A perfect example... your mp3 playback still doesn't work? There are plenty of software packages readily available in the various repo's that come shipped with the *buntu distros (unless you happen to be trying to use a ZUNE) that will get that resolved with monumental ease. No command line needed.
Assuming that we, here, are all power users is just wrongful profiling. We have top notch folks here, from all walks of life. White-collar, Blue-collar, students and retirees.

There is one thing I'll address directly...

If I, a complete noob at the time, can install a DIY distro like CRUX with less than 25 real man-hours involved on old antiquated hardware that originally ran Win NT4, asked a few questions along the way, and you can't get video going on one of the friendliest members of the Linux family, then, yeah... ya did something wrong somewhere!

By the way... why are you getting all twisted that we disagree with you on this? YOU are the one that came HERE to complain without giving any solid examples of your actual issues.
    Ok, last things first....

I'm not all twisted that anybody disagrees with me. Not at all, not in the least.

I have only really seen one person saying they disagree with me, and that is cool with me too. There is a difference between telling me they don't feel the same way I do about something, its another thing to tell me I don't know my arse from a hole in the ground when I talk about Wine. The first one is disagreeing, the second one is enlightenment for me. Either one is ok with me.

I asked at least a few legitimate questions, and some of them have been very well answered, and I don't have a problem with being shown the light when I'm stumbling around blindly in the dark, not even when it's in public, or in the form of "Well, ya moron, that's exactly what that does, not what you thought it did." I can take that gracefully, and even say Thank You...

As far as making stuff work? My video worked fine, still does. My MP3s work fine, after an hour on the internet figuring out why they didn't work and how to fix it. Now all is fine with MP3s. I STILL have sound issues which I already promised to bring up singly in a separate thread.

And I don't assume anyone on here is a Linux God, much less everyone. I was actually hoping to commiserate with like folks who have also had problems and gotten them fixed, but were able to still recognize that shortcomings DO in fact still exist in some areas....

You know, I am clueless about a lot of Linux stuff, but not all of it. I compare it to windows because that is what I know best, and its a common frame of reference that most people can understand. NOT because I expect Linux to be OpenWindows. If I had OSX references to share where I felt like they were doing something right that Linux could improve on, I would probably mention that too, but I don't.

If I were converting from Linux to Windows, I would probably be on a Windows forum complaining about the lack of repositories, the lax security, the viruses, the potential for just any user to interact with the system in a catastrophic way, the instability, the bloat, etc, etc, etc. And I would be asking why those issues haven't been addressed in the 25 years Windows has been going.

Actually, I'm glad you brought that post back up. Since posting that one, you have explained things quite a bit more clearly what most of your complaints are really about.
I saw them as , not really trollish, but as griping and whining. I now see that you are ready to get some feed-back and get everything situated.
So I would like to say that I do apologize for mistaking your intentions in this thread.

To be honest, most of the points you brought up have been discussed, and some have actually had some public discussion with mixed opinions.

No apologies needed, please. As has been pointed out, and rightfully so, I probably could have said a better hello than a 3000 word gripe.

I have to play UO with my son now, but I'll try to catch up and say the rest of *my* apologies tomorrow.
