As for video drivers, the ones supported by xorg just work on the BSDs and if you use NVIDIA, then there is even an official driver. I am not sure about ATI because I don't bother with ATI cards.
I found it quite simple to get started with FreeBSD and didn't really have to relearn a lot. It was quite handy to browse through the
handbook before diving in.
