This is an experience, how did I manage to gain a 99% working Mandriva 2009.1:
The only so to say acceptable desktop environment (except of GNOME, which is not my favor) at a moment is XFCE 4.6.1 it seems that the only bug is that I cannot rotate the keyboard layouts with keyboard shortcuts. I can only go from Layout A to Layout B, but no reverse way, but with the mouse click, but at least the indicator doesn't crash. Of course the upgrade to 4.6.1 wasn't sufficient, so I've installed the latest desktop kernel too, and since it seems they left out the kernel module for the ndiswrapper, I had to install the dkms-ndiswrapper package to. Finally the system works!
All in all, this is a very miserable result from a such a nice Linux.
I did throw away the other DEs, because:
1. KDE 4 doesn't have a stable media manager and automatic managing possibilities, and it crashes very often
2. The KDE 3 is present, but crippled, and not independent from KDE4
3. Enlighten is still in scratches
4. I dislike the GNOMEIf you need a CD/DVD catalogizer, give a try to my program:

Whats the post about???
You are asking for help or just giving your opinion? If its the second coffee lounge should be the forum...
Forum admins may atleast delete 'coffee lounge' threads to save disk space, not so with help threads...
Kidding....
Btw, I use mandriva with KDE4 and its rocks. Crashed once but am unable to pin-point if it was os problem or my mistake. Wireless too works fine (may be because my wireless hardware is well supported.A candle looses nothing by lighting other candles. - Khalil Zibran.

Please, define me, what does it mean to you "rocks"! Have you used KDE 3.5? I could logout if I wanted to, I could set the behavior of the medias with KDE, so when I've inserted a video DVD, smplayer did open it, or a data DVD, I only had to insert it and the Konqueror did open it for me. now there is an idiotic pop-up applet, with non-definable options, and I have to choose whether I want to open it with dolphin, or with dragonplayer, and of course I cannot save my choice, so each time I insert a DVD, I have to click at least twice, or I'm risking that my media won't be mounted at all. Is this "rock'n'oll"? No, it is even worse than Windows!

For the moment I'm keeping Mandrice 2009 on my B drive for games and Mandrive 2008 on my A drive for everything else. (With KDE 3.5) The best thing about 2009 is the Virtual Box with an ISO of an old Dyne:bolic.

O.K, I've finally anchored myself to the Gnome. Even Xfce wasn't stable enough. Gnome seems to be stable, although a bit slow. Now if they only released a newer version of K3b....
But Gnome-Commander was a love at first look!If you need a CD/DVD catalogizer, give a try to my program:
