Chess

Do you think chess a sport, or just another board game?

sport, well, if we say that anything you can compete in is a sport, then chess is a sport. But, I voted no, because well, when I hear sport I think of soccer, american football, STCC(I think I got the letters right -- one of the car sports), Formula1, baseball, debugging, etc...

I don't consider chess a sport. Perhaps a better question is "Do you consider chess a game?" Some people I've worked with swear it's not "just a game". Personally, I don't consider a lot of the things they put in the Olympics sports.. Guess it depends on the person.

Hell no

A sport is physical activity with certain rules set up that governs certain actions to win.

So, yea man. Chess is a killer sport. I remember when we used to have huge chessbenders, where afterwards we were all like

"phew, man, my arm hurts. I can feel I'm getting stronger!"
And then Ward would be totally tired and puffing on his inhaler. Sid would always need a shower afterwards. Phew, man, I'm tired just thinking about it.

On a side note:

Sport
Obsolete. Amorous dalliance; lovemaking.
How could anyone say Amorous dalliance; lovemaking, does not accurately describe a chessperson!

Here's a definition I found on Merriam-Webster that I found kind of humorous, since I haven't the foggiest idea what they're saying:

So, a sport is someone with a mutation? Woohoo! X-Men is a sport!

Chess is not a sport in the traditional (physical) sense.
It is a "mindsport".

In Europe they have a "mindsports olympiad" every year, which constitutes of many "board games" and various other games of skill.

...Sadly as poor as you all rate chess, i'm a checkers player, and we get even less recognition as a "mindsport" than chess does.

Although there aren't as many possible moves in checkers, there is still a very high skill level needed to play it at competative levels. One slight mistake and you will lose a game. (unlike in chess where a slight mistake may go unnoticed very easily, and only big mistakes are capitalized on by most players)

and yes i'm fully aware that i'm going to get hammered for admitting this....

but you can check out the American Checkers Federation website (i'm current webmaster with no time to do updates so it stays pretty stale most of the time... until classes slow down a bit anyway)
