Chess is not a sport in the traditional (physical) sense.
It is a "mindsport".
In Europe they have a "mindsports olympiad" every year, which constitutes of many "board games" and various other games of skill.
...Sadly as poor as you all rate chess, i'm a checkers player, and we get even less recognition as a "mindsport" than chess does.
Although there aren't as many possible moves in checkers, there is still a very high skill level needed to play it at competative levels. One slight mistake and you will lose a game. (unlike in chess where a slight mistake may go unnoticed very easily, and only big mistakes are capitalized on by most players)
and yes i'm fully aware that i'm going to get hammered for admitting this....
but you can check out the American Checkers Federation website (i'm current webmaster with no time to do updates so it stays pretty stale most of the time... until classes slow down a bit anyway)
