To keep or sell away?
I have an outdated Pentium III on which I have done everything in my life. It was used when I bought it but I still am stuck on the point that whether to sell it or not.
Pros:
* Its branded Toshiba
* It has no such issues except that I cannot run modern Linux OS on it
* The laptop which I will be moving to after selling this machine is Compaq Armada E500, again old and ugly. Is it good for openSUSE 11.1 by the way? (256 MB RAM, 851 MHZ, 40 GB HD).
Cons:
* One RAM slot does not work, left on the mercy of 256 MB RAM
* Very frustrating sometimes, in sense of hardware; sometimes!
* Creates a lot of noise
* Is big and slow
* It doesn't sell, "PIII time has ended, give me scrap charges to dispose this off!"
* I cannot have 3D effects on my Linux desktops
Please help me decide whether to sell it or not."When you have nothing to say, say nothing."

I think it's no use to sell it. Computers have become that cheap that you will not get much money for it. So it is better to use it as long as it serves you.

I'd agree with computerophil. Unless you really need the money then there is no point. If anyone would actually buy the computer it would probably be for parts so you would get very little money, if any at all, for it.
I would suggest keeping it to play on. Maybe you could create a router out of it or a file server?Linux User #453176

What I am really eager about is, to trash it away. I am seeing the same box since 7 years, and think it is time I trash it off. Only the ugly Linux DEs work on it and only Win XP is an OS which runs on it, combining beauty and speed. I don't want to use it. Modern laptops come wit original Win Vista and it would be stupidity to install Linux on those machines (you don't get a CD with it). There are machines without Vista but they are not up to the mark. What do I do?
And if I sell it to a museum?"When you have nothing to say, say nothing."

I don't think a museum will buy it better if you really don't want it anymore you make a donation to someone who can't afford a new PC. It might be old but it is still good.
Maybe you didn't watch clear enough to find the wright distro?
You say only the ugly once work on it (that I can't believe).
What is an ugly one what is a beautiful one. What do you expect from a distro to be beautiful?
I do the other way round: I can't stand Vista! I like simple OSs without to many things around. There should be a difference between a christmastree and a workstation.

My sis says Vista is for the working lot while Linux is for the other one. Indeed, you cannot blame upon something for having a lot of things. I would like them on my box. Ugly means IceWM or such desktops. Beautiful ones are the KDE 4 and GNOME (I have a strange umblical cord with GNOME).
KDE 3 is the one ehich works for me but KDE 4 is pathetic. What do you think about the laptop I mentioned in the first post, is it good for a distro like openSUSE?
I have actually got time to check out new distros. I have made 11 or more tries. The only one I liked weas Freespire, which combined both beauty and speed, but I had to trash it because it repos are not continued anymore."When you have nothing to say, say nothing."

You may want to look into a distribution like Ubuntu. It works well out of the box and comes with Gnome.

usama,
i would suggest a third option, give it away!
Install Zenwalk linux and give it to some poor student. let him/her make use of it. Zenwalk's minimum requirement is just P3 and 128MB ram. Its DE is certainly not ugly...
whatever, just don't trash it...A candle looses nothing by lighting other candles. - Khalil Zibran.

I dont think anyone wold be as poor to buy this PC
. But I have planned to use it as long as it serves me. I am going to install openSUSE on it. I like famous distros. Others seem pimitive and it is often difficult to get help on them (specially while installing hardware). Moreover, these "unofficial" ones don't tend to give much a pretty interface. I would like a KDE 4 desktop on my PC (planned to keep it). Who knows when these will be discontinued? But indeed, the famous ones owe a large investment on part of the company and they are hard to discontinue. Even further, the famous ones have been surviving since long and are done by more experienced companies.
