Big HELLO!
Hello everyone,
I'm Drycola (surely this is not my real name
), I consider myself an advanced Windows Programmer, but now, I've decided to switch to Linux.
What attracted me to Linux is what I heard about its customizability.
What I really want to do is to make a new Distro containing all my 'wierd' imaginary ideas for an operating system.
I've started with Ubunut 7.10 Gutsy on my Dell Inspiron 1100, but because I don't have direct internet connection, downloading additional programs is a big pain!!
I liked the way of package installation in SLAX, it is so practical and simple.
Oh, and I would like to mention also that in Iraq (where I live) no licenses are required for using software, and I can get ALL Windows full versions for free!!
So the copyright issues mean nothing for me
.
Please say welcome to me : D

Thanks for your welcome.
I wonder if you know any place where I can find repositories for my 'out-of-support' version of ubuntu?

Welcome to the forums. I don't know of any place for the repositories, but hopefully someone will.http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/ is the place to learn how to build your own distro from the ground up. Download the book when you get a chance & read up on it.

:)
Hello Drycolla and everyone

My name is Raluca, I'm from Bucharest, Romania and I consider myself a big fan of Ubuntu (which is, pretty much, for my country the most popular Linux distribution- sadly, still, it's not so popular compared to the M$ giant- you know, we have kind of a slang term in Romania; we call "Windows" "Windose"-as in "a dose of a drug, 'cause it's so hard to avoid it's almost like the society is addicted to it
. I've been using Ubuntu for a few months now and recently I have decided to fully boycott Microsoft products for ethical reasons.
My boyfriend is very involved with the Ubuntu community in Romania, he has translated a lot of Linux stuff into Romanian language, has done some developing and so on. I'm really 100% clueless about programming (I'm a Philosophy/Sociology student, so you can imagine...) but I'd be interested in helping the open source community in other ways, if my help is needed.
I often get the feeling (maybe even overreacting a bit) that Linux users are being discriminated against; for instance, in Romania at least, at school (from primary to high school and further on into college, except maybe for those who actually study computer science) we only work on computers with Windows on; and recently, as I needed to buy a mouse for my computer, I've noticed that on the package of all mouses available at a big hypermarket in Bucharest, it was mentioned that they required Windows (or in one or two cases, Windows or Mac) to work. Now, that's called misinforming the consumer! Not to mention that while Romanian legislation usually requires for everything bought for public projects to go trough a bidding process and for the lowest-price product to be selected, this rule dose not apply when it comes to operating systems, and they give a huge load of money to M$ without ever considering the alternatives. What was I saying about "the Windose"? :P
Anyway, it's very nice to meet you all and I really wonder if you'd be interested in discussing these issues.
Have a great day

I wouldn't want to hijack a welcome thread, but if you start another thread, I'm sure you will get a lot of interest in the Window$ discussion if we keep it civil.Anyway, it's very nice to meet you all and I really wonder if you'd be interested in discussing these issues.Registered Linux User #420832
