As someone once said, it's the little things that kill you! Guardian angel indeed!

I guess it's also the small things that save you. This girl was struck by lightning and
was saved by holding hands with her boyfriend and having her Ipod with her.

Yeah. The headphones were around her neck, so they channeled the current away from her head, and since they were holding hands, the current was split between the two of them. Lucky indeed!

I think it can be genuinely defined as a shocking experience.

Are commercial Radon Detectors made yet? Years ago we use to shoot pool in a friends basement where I used to get ill. Discovered it was radon so I stop going to his house.

I think so. At least there used to be. I remember getting all the junk-mail ads back in the 70's and early 80's for them when radon was a big public bogeyman. There was a big lung cancer scare about it causing, though I think that has mostly been attributed to second-hand smoke these days. However, there's no doubt that radon isn't good for you. Constantly breathing measurable levels of alpha radiation cannot be good for your lungs.

Alpha radiation is the worst for you. While gamma radiation can penetrate better it is actually alpha radiation that causes the most damage once near your organs and other innards.

    From Wikipedia
It is the most strongly ionizing, and with large enough doses can cause any or all of the symptoms of radiation poisoning. It is estimated that chromosome damage from alpha particles is about 100 times greater than that caused by an equivalent amount of other radiation.
