    Best Alternative to MSN

What is the best alternative to MSN and what is the best client to work with it?

I used to use Kopete until it one day could no longer log into my account. Since then I have been using Pidgin and have had no further problems with it and I like the GUI better than any other IM programs I've seen so far...

Pidgin is very good. You can also try Empathy, Kopete and aMSN.

I can be found either 40 miles west of Chicago, or in a galaxy far, far away.

XMPP, IRC, or ICQ work well. Google Chat uses XMPP. Then there is AIM which a lot of the world uses. I have AIM and XMPP (Google) accounts. If you have a gmail account, you can use that very easily. As for a client UI, I like Pidgin because is supports just about everything quite well. It's only downside is lack of support for video chat. For that, I use skype.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
