Straight horror seldom cuts it for me anymore. I need something to add an otherworldly or alien element to the story. I think that was much of why "The Shining" was so immensely popular as both a novel and a movie. It was set in a world of isolation and climate extreme. The book had a lot of plot that the movie totally missed, but still... the movie managed to convey those extra elements.

One book that I'll probably read soon is "Event Horizon". An equal blend of horror and space opera. In this case the book was based upon the movie. Usually that doesn.t bode well for the reader, but I really enjoyed the movie, so unless the book is just awful, I'll probably get something out of it.

As for favorite horror authors, it's mainly the staples... Poe, Shelly, Stoker, King, Koontz, and Barker for starters.

Of course all of these pale in comparison to a certified letter from the IRS. Now that's horror!

I don't read much horror, but I am a huge fan of H.P. Lovecraft. He wrote the seminal Call of Cthulhu, but also a ton of other short stories that focus on forbidden knowledge, the Elder Gods, and dark other dimensions. It's hard to explain, and gets a little weird, but it's quite good.

Laurell K. Hamilton's books are a guilty pleasure of mine. No pun intended.

    Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter Series

I've also read a few novels by Clive Barker and far, far too many by Stephen King. I'm pretty tired of those two personally.

I've read The Shining. I've read too many Stephen King books, also. I got tired of it. I only recently read H. P. Lovecraft, never read Clive Barker. Read most of, but never finished: Dracula, by Bram Stoker and Turn of the Screw by Henry James. Both good. I changed my mind, though, and went and bought some anthologies and a James Herbert novel. I haven't read it yet, never read a James Herbert book. I don't care for Dean Koontz. I liked the movie Event Horizon. Some Poe, also - I like what I've read of Poe. I read the first Anne Rice - Interview with the Vampire, but never read any others. I'll definitely finish Turn of the Screw one day, Dracula also. I just changed my mind about what I wanted to read, was in the mood for something new and different. Got Dark Delicacies I and II, saw the first one won the Stoker award. Poe's Children - the anthology, also. Edited by Peter Straub.

I haven't read horror in a long time but as a kid I really enjoyed "The Celery Stalks at Midnight" by James Howe.

For real horror these days, I try to keep track of most governments invasion of our privacies. So far the worst appear to be China, Great Britain and the U.S. , but many others are racing to catch up.
