threat to linux?
does anyone find google OS a threat to linux?
honestly it sounds like it might bring more users to linux. It sounds like a net based operating system that will attract Windows users and then they might be opened up to try out linux. So i dont find it a threat to Linux OS but i wish google with all its money and man power would have teamed up and made a linux Distro not a whole new OS. i believe with all of google's reasources it could do some real good for the Linux community.
Well this is my first Post on this forum so I will say a little about myself now. Hi I am 18, a cook and i have been using linux for about 2 1/2 years now. I also freelance web design on the side for a little extra cash. I am CIW certified web designer. I use both Fedora 11 and Archlinux.

How could something be threated that is not trying to take over the world? Linux' goal has never been to dominate. It is a choice for those who want it.

After seeing that Google Chrome Browser only works on newer equipment with newer Versions of Windows I don't think that Google OS will run on Older Hardware anyhows. So for folks who don't have the latest or greatest equipment GNU/Linux distros will always fit the bill. There is still a lot of older hardware out in the world that can use a differnet choice to get online. So Google OS will fit a certain niche, just like all the other GNU/Linux distros.

It clearly says it will be Linux. What is not clear is if they'll use the X Server.
The gifts that Google OS will bring to Linux:
-More people will learn that there are other OSes other than Windows(you'd be suprised how many don't know that!!)
-Hardware vendors will support Linux more. Now it is up to the kernel hackers to a big extent.
- 07-19-2009 #8And I have Chromium-Linux installed in Ubuntu Hardy and AntiX, I thought when talking about a threat that it was basically about Windows users switching to Google OS Vs Linux. I sure don't see anybody running Windows 2000 or Me or 98 running Chrome OS. We have had enough practise getting things to work with Linux. Some folks just want to plug in and run.Khm,... I have Chrome Browser installed on Xubuntu Jaunty,Linux Registered User # 475019

Actually, Google puts it's resources where they most benefit the entire Linux community... into the development of the kernel. Last year Google was the largest contributor toward the development of the Linux kernel, both in terms of funding and of developer man-hours donated. Doesn't mean I'm all warm and fuzzy over Google, but I do like to acknowledge the facts. I can see how the average Joe could miss this though, Google is much better known for other things.

I'm sorry. Where are my manners?! Welcome to Linuxforums, Serverman.

May this just be the first of many valued contributions.
