    Steps to see this?

    steps to see this?
hi forum. i found a helpful older post on this forum. the poster attached this at the end of the post. i tried to open it up and read it and got this message: /tmp/canonmx700.ppd-3.txt could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences.

since i am new to ubuntu, i have no idea how to address this error message. can anybody help me with this?

by the way, here is what the poster attached at the end of the forum posting:

    canonmx700.ppd.txt (14.5 KB, 2455 views)

Try right-clicking the file and select "Open With..." - it's a text file, so choose any word processor like OpenOffice Writer or text editor. Then if you like it you can select "do this for this file type all the time" (something like that). That should work.

Go to Edit->Preferences->Applications. Scroll down in content type to find the entry for [i]plain text document[/b]. Select the app you want to open the file with. For Ubuntu, you'll probably want gedit. Unforunately, Firefox doesn't give you a nice list of available apps to use, when the window pops up to choose your app, you'll need to navigate to /usr/bin/gedit

EDIT: Amy is correct if you have downloaded the file already.

Gedit is what he would probably be using, since he is new to Ubuntu and Ubuntu is new as well.

    Try renamng it to *.jpg.

A ppd file is a printer file, or a Postscript Printer Description to be exact. CUPS reads it, so to know how to drive the printer. It's the *nix equivalent of a printer driver

You can get rid of the txt extension, my theory is that the poster added that so to be able to post it here (there is a very un-*nix like mandatory file extension restriction on posting on the boards).

So name it canonmx700.ppd and copy it to the proper directory, probably somewhere like /usr/share/cups/model and CUPS should be able to find it and install the printer.

Ah yes, this question was posted on an ubuntu forum as well with a link to the file, and it does seem to be a ppd file.

There is also a how to on the Linux Mint forums.
