Talking Doom 3 engine will be open sourced, maybe in 2009!!!

At the QuakeCon 2007, John Carmack, the lead graphics engine developer at id, said to LinuxGames: "I mean, I won't commit to a date, but the Doom 3 stuff will be open source." And like its predecessors, John Carmack has said that id Tech 4 will be released as open source.
I can't find the original statement of John Carmack, I found this on Wikipedia and a few other sites.
This is the best gaming news we 've heard in years. Imagine all the nice but graphically outdated Linux FPS being ported to Doom 3 engine!!!!!
They will totally rock; just compare the 2 images, the difference is chaotic!!!

They did release many other major engine sources as copylefted Free Software, so we can be reasonably confident that Doom3 will face the same fate.

I am puzzled about how you got the number 2009 though. Or was that a big "maybe"?

The date is not definite, I guess it will be a bit after Doom 4 with the new idTech5 engine is released. 2009 is speculated in the wikipedia article.
I can't wait for the idTech4 versions of every Linux FPS!!
