A Newbie
I just became a member of the forum. I went to Linux because I purchased a laptop four months ago that came with Vista (Basic). That OS is junk. It is so slow that the application programs regularly go to "Not responding" for 20-30 seconds. But unfortuately Linux does not work on all of my application programs. So I chose between Vista or Linux when I logged in and XP in the Virtual Box. I am stuck with Vista when I need to use the USB port (USB port does not work in the Virtual Box - I have read in the forum about possible fixes) and the program does not work in Linux (garble text in the fields). So my setup is not 100% running smoothly. I am hoping that I have come to the right place for assistance.

Hi!!
Looks like I get to be the first to welcome another newbie! I'm a newbie too, but I'm just so excited about Linux that I love to welcome people in who are just finding their way into the wonderful awesomeness of Linux!
What Linux do you use? I'm on Ubuntu (recommended by a wonderful person who says the hardware support is better than just about any other distro, and it has hyooge, gynormous, friendly active forums to help newbies like me).
Welcome!
Newbie hugs,
Amy

I am also using Ubuntu. I do like it but unfortunately it is not a panacea.

Welcome to Linux. I think you will find a stable, reliable, secure, and robust operating system.
If you have any questions just ask, this forum is full of Linux users that can help you.
Here is some advice, Windows applications normally do not work in Linux but there are are Linux equivalents to many many applications. I'm sure if you post what Windows programs you use then someone will know what Linux alternative there is.
