I understand "linux newbie" but can somebody please explain how one is rated as a "trusted penguin", "linux engineer", "super moderator" etc? Just curious....

It's all about the number of posts you make. The more posts you make the "better" the title - so the more you help other people out the better
I believe it's been discussed a few times about removing this feature as it shouldn't matter how many posts someone has helped - once is more then enough
One last thing - a moderator is someone who has been given admin privileges (to delete/move posts, ban spamming users, etc) so it doesn't matter how much you post, you will only get that status if you're a 'chosen one'

Oh, and "The Coffee Lounge" is a special place where you can post what you like without affecting your post count
