It is very late where I am right now, so I will be brief. I have been looking at some of the latest portable media players, and particularly, some of the really low price ones from China and Korea. Among the latest are models with 8GB built in Flash, and MicroSD slots, and screens with 400 x 240 screens, and larger. I expect the processors (all are probably ARM) are most likely 400 MHz. and maybe faster now.

But there is little you can find out about the system software. It is mainly all sort of "closed". That is hard to describe since mostly the software is written by the chip makers in "kit" form and the manufacturers mainly just add some final parameters.

But the biggest specific disappointment for me right now if that they are all including a ridiculously lame "ebook" application, which is a limited text reader. This despite the fact that there are open source HTML applications like Firefox around.

In fact, with 8GB Flash, it is very sad that someone does not have one with a small Linux port on the market yet.
