Here I go.
It's time to get back into my zone. I am sick of Windows and am making the move to Linux. I'm sure I will have lots of questions and I hope all are willing to help out. I'm fairly knowledgeable about computers as I worked a lot with DOS and windows X. It's just been so long since I watched that code run. Wow, brings back memories. My first goal with Linux is to install a program successfully. This, I'm sure, will take time but once I get the hang of it, I'm introducing it to every kid I have in my classroom. Being a teacher, I can share this wonderful world of Linux to kids and help them understand that Windows is not the only option out there. Until later.

Wow, you surely must have been away some time when you still think of software installation as a task.

I think you will be delighted to find out that this has become a matter of setting a checkbox in most distributions meanwhile.
Enjoy your stay.

That's a wonderful cause.. even if out of 30 students 2-3 start using linux semi-permanently down the line in their lives.. thats mission accomplished if you ask me

Linux must have come a verrrrry long way in a pretty short time.
I had no experience and discovered Linux without even knowing it. It was cleverly hidden behind an interface that was so simple and "familiar" to a Windows / Mac user that I just assumed it was one or the other. It flies along on an old computer that alot of us kids share at a dance studio. We work on homework, surf the web, listen to music, all that stuff. The only reason I found out it's Linux was because I commented on how fast and how simple that old computer is to use.
I wrote about it! You can point some of your kids to my article to encourage them.
Have fun!

Well, I have been using windows for a while and installing on them seems to be quite different. I actually build my own computers so I feel that I am ok with them, but as of right now, I'm having serious problems installing and running a game. I'm using yellowdog 6.1 on my ps3. Trying to run a couple of games I downloaded. Simple graphics, just to install and successfully run a program.
I'll keep all informed.
