This just goes to show how ridiculous the whole software patent system is. Honestly, why should anyone be able to patent a certain use of XML? It's not a rhetorical question, I really want to know.

I would say yaaaay to Microsoft, but the reasoning has my ears perked. What does this mean for the dozens, maybe hundreds, of other common programs that make use of XML?

Its by no means final. Microsoft are still able to appeal the ruling. Whats more likley is that they patch the offending bit and continue selling word. Although that said I would imagine that companies expecting to roll out the latest flippetygombospletch office suite may well sit up and take note.

    It's a ruling I'm extremely conflicted about.

On one hand it is an extremely dangerous ruling and demonstrates quite clearly the problems with patents being granted by people with no understanding of what they are doing. Or it does to those who understand.

On the other hand, one of the biggest software patent whores is finding out what it feels like from the other side

Agreed. Unfortunately without patent reform we are stuck with this system. Its only marginally better in the UK.

While patents are an issue I am loving that M$ is getting a taste for it's own.
