Hello from Northern Calif
Hi! everyone from around the world. I was browsing though Flapper locations and too see how linux is made possible from with the contributions from people around the world. For some reason, it triggered memories of the song..What the World needs now......my senior moment cant recall if it was Pepsi or Coke that used it or sponsored it. Speaking of Senior, I am old dog trying to learn new linux tricks. I have been trying to break with windows, unsuccessfully for years now. I built my first debian package from non debian source recently with some bugs, but still gave me feeling of success. I have some old computers I want to loan out to people that cannot afford one. I gave one away and I think it was thrown away, dont really know where it ended up. <smile> so now I loan them to friends. I have one loaned out with Xp but I cant afford to put xp on loaner computers. Anyway I will soon be 64 and I hope I never get tired of learning. I like to write,, can you tell? <smile>
oops there are smileys to my right----->

Hi everyone
Thanks everyone for the nice welcome. Yes Bigvoo, last computer I rescued was headed to a dumpster, spoke up to save it for my collection. Its a Gateway, that I could not get it going with Windows 98, only Xp had the necessary drivers. I installed Debian Lenny and it got my sound and video going.
Most people I hang out with can barely afford dialup, so my biggest problem till now has been the modem connections. But since I tried Chestnut-dialer I am having less problems. I have found easier to work with Vector Linux and Debian, but would like to learn to install more distros. (it took me a while to figure out what a distro was <smile>, thought it was a species of animal.

Welcome to the forum. I have about 12 old computers, some with Win 98 and Win2k, but am going to take the time to find out what distros will run on each. I run Ubuntu8.04, 9.04, Debian 2.2, DSL, AntiX 8.2, Mepis 8, Mint 5 XFCE and Red Hat 6.1 on some of them.

Thanks for the welcome.
I have tried about a dozen distros and my favorite so far are Debian and Vector Linux. Vector Linux has a Chestnut-dialer that got my actiontec modem going, when I couldnt get it going with the rest. I have an old gateway micro atx, that I was having troubles getting sound and video to work with others and it installed very well., with Debian I was not able to install slackware and others, but plan to try others too. I think some distros are packed with more drivers, but thats just my guess. Mint, was good too. FrankLast edited by frank56; 08-24-2009 at 03:59 AM. Reason: error
