A Healthy Geek Is A Wealthy Geek

I have been spending most of my leisure time on my laptop trying to learn linux for the past 5 months and have realized that I have gained much weight when I took the scale this morning. 15 lbs! darn!

I used to run daily and regularly join 10Ks in our city (6.1M). Sunday mornings for me were reserved for my longest run of the week. I do the mountain trail where I get to enjoy fresh air amidst all the birds chirping with all those thick green shrubs and trees. I enjoy meeting runners on the trail. I will have to do something about this and hope that in the next 60 days, I can make my love for running compliment my new found love for linux.

If I may not be to personal, may I ask the others if they could share the forms of exercise they enjoy doing?

    Not too personal at all.

I personally practice a Japanese martial art called Kendo, which is frequently referred to as Japanese fencing. In addition, I also enjoy dancing, and do Scottish country dance and Contra dance. I don't mind the occasional hike, but I'm not a huge outdoorsman.

When I was younger I was in Tae Kwon Do. Later on, I used to bike (the non-motorized kind), and for a while recently I used the Wii Fit. Exercise has to be disguised as something else or I'll stop doing it. Lately I've been considering taking up Tai Chi.

I walk for a total of around 10 hours every single week. I know what you mean nujinini. I haven't been looking at Linux for a while now, but if you're at all sedentary you will put weight on eventually. I used to do a lot of weight training. Actually all I had was:

    - dumbells
    - a curved bicep bar+weights
    - a skipping rope
    - an exercise mat
    - an exercise ball (for sit-ups).

A lot of open source diehards enjoy martial arts, including kung fu an (as mentioned by Moe up there) Tae Kwon Do.

I frequently go out for a hike. Mostly just in the city, as I live in one of those medieval cities with winding streets and little alleys I've never have taken the same route twice. And sometimes in the dunes close to my home.

I used to do Aikido, which I'm thinking about taking up again. And I used to sail, until my boat got stolen

That said, I've never done 'sitting work' and I was always on my feet. But lately I've been doing office work mostly and it's beginning to show

I do a martial art called Shorinji Kempo. I sometimes wonder if all martial arts have the same effect, but we do tend to attract techies and engineers.

I also cycle a bit and I'm examining commuting to work by bike, but that's only incidentally exercise.

I can't really run or do weigh lifting but I do walk a lot at College. So much, that I usually lose between 8-10 pounds the first few weeks. Walking 4-5 miles a day and genearlly eating less.

Well guess what, Roky? You might wanna take a road trip for my lunch money... GEEK!

Seriously though, though I haven't practised in a number of years, I am a Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. I also wrestled varsity in high school for 3 years.
So I guess I agree with what some other members have mentioned... open source kinda draws some of us towards the martial arts.
