    How the heck you be?

Just a quick intro.... I am a linux newbie for starters. I recently received an old IMac, which I believe is from 98, and I am going to attempt to turn it into a linux machine... If I don't try, I will never learn!

1st issue- no cd's what so ever came with the IMac, will I need these to install linux?

2nd issue- unable to get past the login screen, a friend advised it was due to 'firmware' (I think that was the name), does this mean the puter is a lost cause for turning her into a linux machine?

3rd issue- I hate calling it a her, gotta find her a name....

You should be able to install Gentoo on a PPC mac: www.gentoo.org
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

No you can still install Linux even though it won't Log into OSX.

What about Webby, after Huey, Dewey, and Louie's nanny's granddaughter in DuckTales? H,D,&L were the grandnephews of Scrooge McDuck, so she's a kind of cute, almost relation to a M(a)cDuck - extended family-wise.

There may be several distros that work on a Mac. Google "Linux on a Mac" for some interesting finds. I hear that Gentoo works on a Mac but's really hard to install and not beginner-friendly. Distrowatch.com is also searchable for distros that work on a Mac. Most of the better ones do need to be installed from a CD, but some fit on a USB stick and will work if your Mac can boot from a USB stick.

As for a name..... well, Amy is a pretty name. It means "friend." As in amiable. Or Kathryn (Kate, or Katie - happens to be my middle name lol) is a nice name for a sweet, "amyable" computer!

Well, I think he will find more if he chooses to google for a linux distro for his CPU architecture, namely PowerPC (or PPC).

Apple has used this CPU architecture for a long time but has switched to the Intel architecture recently.
PPC distro's are still out there, and most of the normal distro's I think can be run also on PPC. The thing is only because it is less populair, that you will have to look a bit harder.

Debian has a ppc port, so that may be a place to start.
