    Welcome to the forums!

Check this HowTo to make sure you are properly downloading the ISO file, burning it to disk as an image, then booting with the disk:

Post back should you continue to have problems after following the steps in the HowTo.

    Downloading Linux

It took me a couple of download tries with each before it worked but I was able to get a bootable CD disk to work for Linux Mint and Linux Fendora. Infrarecorder is a good program to convert the ISO Image to your CD under windows but don't know if it will work for Win7 as I have XP. Make sure your computer will boot to CD drive before the hard drive so your Linux will load. I'm a newbie too and if I can do it I am sure you can. I am finding that you need a lot of patience and information is scattered but is out there if you dig.

hi Chuck, and welcome, just want t be VERy specific about what you are clicking ..do you mean :: TRY linux without any changes to your computer ? because to INSTALL linux on your computer requires partitioning. trying linux without any change to your computer is called a : live session, it will run at a slower speed, but give you an idea if you like it or not..installing linux means commiting space on your hard drive for linux. I don;t know anything about windoes 7, but hopefully you can get it up and running

Insert the live CD, then turn OFF your computer (Start > Shutdown). Turn it back on and watch the screen during the boot-up process. At some point there's an option to "enter setup." On my computer it's "F12 to enter Setup." Yours may be different. If it's F12 or F10 or whatever, hit it quickly (even a few times won't hurt) before the computer continues booting into Windows.

You'll be presented with a list of boot-up options. Choose "Boot from CD."

Now you can try Ubuntu without making any changes to your computer. Do NOT click on "Install Ubuntu" until you are sure you really like it. If you like it, go for it!

Live CDs only work when you BOOT FROM THE CD.

    Hope that helps,
    Amy
