Keeping track of things you learn

I'm sure many of us have all kinds of projects on the go. Learning this or that distro, writing computer programs, studying this or that.

Keeping track of what you do, and what you learn becomes a challenge, especially when you get a little older and the short term memory doesn't work quite as well as it used to.

I use a program called wikidpad, which is a very nifty little open-source wiki-style knowledge base tool. It's invaluable for catologing and cross referencing all the little tidbits of knowledge I pick up. WikidPad - wiki notebook/outliner for windows

So how do you like to deal with this issue?

I usually keep thorough written notes on each and every distribution installation that I do, and additional notes regarding certain tweaks and such. The written notes are eventually converted into typed documents that are easily edited as needed for future installations or tweaks. Occasionally, I'll trash older documentation if it's pretty certain that it's no longer needed.

I do kind of the same thing, only mine don't get trashed, obviously.

As a techie who is pretty much self taught, I struggled for a long time with knowledge management.

Hmmm, Written notes. Whatever works for you is cool I guess. I tried that, I found it hard to stay organized. I would spend too much time and effort managing information as opposed to learning and doing. And I am not a disciplined guy That's why I like the idea of a personal wiki. There are all sorts of shortcuts for categorizing and cross referencing and indexing. It took a while to develop good habits of use, but now I have my wiki running all day every day, I'd have a hard time without it.

anyways, I don't mean to evangelize, it takes all kinds.

    cheers.

I use Tomboy and a variety of carbon based tablets. I'd like to be more organised though

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

For a long time, my computer just allowed me to become disorganized on a larger scale with less effort. Oh yeah, lets not forget allowing me to generate a lot more paper in the same amount of time.
